Alan Magee (Bio) |
| Alan Magee has become, quite simply, one of Maine's best known painters. He was born in 1947 in Pennsylvania and, after attending art school in Philadelphia, began working as an editorial and book illustrator in New York in 1969. His illustrations for books and magazines received numerous awards, including a National Book Award in 1982, and awards from the Art Directors Clubs of Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. In the late 1970's, Magee began to concentrate on his personal paintings and in 1980 had his first solo show in New York. Since that time, he has had annual one-person shows throughout the United States and Europe. An Alan Magee Retrospective exhibition opened at the James A. Michener Art Museum in 2003; the Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, Maine, in 2004; the Museum of Texas Tech University, in 2004 as well.
Alan Magee has received awards for his painting from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters and the National Academy of Design. Several television documentaries have been made about his work, including by Maine PBS, and he has been interviewed on radio on Voice of America, Monitor Radio in New York, WHYY in Philadelphia, and Pacifica Radio in San Francisco. A profile of the artist appeared in the March/April 2001 issue (#332) of Graphis. Alan Magee is represented in the collections of museums from Maine to Texas to California and beyond. Alan and wife Monika reside in Cushing, Maine.
