Nancy Morgan Barnes - encounters

October 5 - 28, 2023

Opening Reception: Oct. 5, 5-7 pm

Subject matter for painting has evolved over the years but the changes were quiet but distinct.  While I occasionally need to have wild imaginative leaps most of my subjects have been what is around me with embellishments.  An example of a particular subject would be the Underwood typewriter which was my mothers for her work.  I inherited it for my school papers and it then became an object which I painted over and over.  Initially it was a straight forward complicated still life object on a table and transformed from its original purpose as a purveyor of tidy information to an unnatural but solid habitat for small creatures.  Nothing stays the same yet nothing changes! ~ Nancy Morgan Barnes

Born in South Bend, Indiana, Barnes received her undergraduate degree from St. Mary’s College in South Bend, Indiana, and her graduate degree from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1971. She has taught at DePauw University and the Indiana University Bloomington. Barnes has won numerous merit awards and prizes, including a Good Idea Grant from the Maine Arts Commission. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Indiana University Art Museum and Indiana State Museum.
